Money Myth and Beliefs

Money Myth and Beliefs

We all grow up with money myths.
We get a lot of them from our parents and the way they bring us up. I can still hear my mother saying “a dollar saved is a dollar earned”.
I grew up as the oldest and only girl and my father would buy me expensive clothes and footwear, because I was his little girl. I grew up with the money belief, that girls deserve good quality, nice stuff. Maybe I’m lucky. But most of us have the following ingrained beliefs:

-Money is the root of all evil (It is actually the love of money that is supposed to be the root of evil but is it a belief of yours)?
-Money is dirty
-Money is only made by the greedy and dishonest
-Money corrupts (I absolutely believed this belief as I was able to see corruption around me in the system I grew up).
-I don’t deserve to be rich. (As I mentioned above I grew up thinking that I do deserve to be rich).
-You must not brag about money – never say how much you earn, are worth or paid for something (unless is a bargain).
-You can’t have lots of money and be spiritually pure.
-You loose your friends if you get rich. (I saw that too, but it wasn’t the wealthy who broke up the friendship, it was the jealous friend who couldn’t keep up).
-You have to work hard to get rich. (My dad was a great example to work hard to provide to his family. I always admired him for that).
-Happiness and money make poor bedfellows.
-The more you have, the more you’ll want.
-It is somehow better to be poor.
-I wasn’t meant to be rich – if I was I would have been by now.
-I’m not the right type to be rich.

Have a quick look through. Check which ones you believe. Check which ones strike a chord with you? Now take some time and write down ones that mean something to you. Add the ones I missed – there will be a few for sure, because we all grew up with different backgrounds.

Once you have your money beliefs on paper, work out why you hold these beliefs. Is it something you actively thought about, reasoned out and dedicated some research to? Or are they inherited, left over, picked up along the way?

Get rid of any that you can question and accept and nonsense. Discard any that simply aren’t true. Cross out any that stand in the way, hold you back and stop you making money.

What you should be felt with is none at all, nothing, a blank sheet. And now you can write down new beliefs such as:

-Money is great
-Wanting money and wanting to be wealthy is OK.
-I am going to be wealthy.
-I am prepared to put in the work to be wealthy.

Those really wealthy people who made it big, have none of the troublesome money myths we poorer people have. They have purged them or never had them. If we too delete them from our thinking, we stand a better chance of getting there.

Understanding your money myths and where they come from is an important step to becoming wealthy.
